Hey Guys,
We have a running argument going here as to which way text should be running on a vertical sign E.g. A Bowhead Banner. See attached
1. From bottom to top?
2. Top to bottom?
Any opinions much appreciated!
For me when I have done vertical banners...
Left side of banner, bottom to top.
Right side of banner, top to bottom.
If the text is the entirety of the banner (no other elements beside the text), I try to let the banner's placement determine it. For example, a glass double entry door. If placed on the left most side of the left door, again bottom to top, the right side of the right door, top to bottom.
If no one has a firm idea of where it will always hang, bottom to top. And then someone should really think about whether the vertical, text-only vertical banner is appropriate...
In an inside page a book, if an entire page is to be rotated, it is traditional to rotate it anti-clockwise. This is because it is assumed more people will hold the book in their right hand than in their left hand, and it is supposedly easier for most readers to rotate the book clockwise.
That argument does not really apply to a banner, because it is not going to be held in the hand and cannot be rotated. But MikeWe's reasoning makes perfect sense to me.
Note also that the opposite applies on the spine of a book. Spines are always rotated clockwise -- so that when you put the book down with its front cover facing upwards, the spine is the right way up.
I don't think there is any rule to this, other than if it looks wrong it will always bug you. Normally I will do a mock up of where the banner goes and show the client how it would look, then let them decide.
Hello Chris; Unless the client has a preference I always put the beginning of the text at the top. But I don't think there is a set for a layout. ( And I'd NEVER use purple lol

Thanks Guys,
I have always gone the way that Harry & George mention, as in looking at it like a book.
But I think MikeWe comments are something to think about as to the position of the signage.
In this particular job I think I will go with Mike in Canada's Idea and let the customer decide.
Cheers
