This is from a digital camera? I haven't tested this in X5, but I recall (in several previous versions) that Photopaint reads DPI from the EXIF data, even after the actual file dpi has been changed. So this meant you could open a photo, resample the DPI, save, re-open in Photopaint only to see the photo back at the original DPI. BUT checking the actual FILE by using something else (like IrfanView) to check would show the file had actually been changed, but Photopaint was still using the EXIF info (that doesn't get updated when resampling etc).
Now I'm curious & I'm going to have to check this later. I remember when I first saw it, I thought I was going nuts.. like "I know I just resampled this, why is it still 72dpi!?
Hope it helps,
Andrew
Photopaint reads DPI from the EXIF data, even after the actual file dpi has been changed.
I just tested & confirmed that it's still this way in X5.
Chose an image direct from my camera, jpg. Well, a copy of it because I'm gonna re-save to test this...
So, open it in Photopaint. Show rulers in inches, check resample dialog & it's about 13x17 at 180 dpi. Okay, that's also what EXIF says AND what IrFan says the actual dpi is.
Resample in Photopaint. Maintained original size, changed dpi to 600. Now it's about 4x5.
Now, CLOSE the resampled image, & verify the dpi in the export dialog. Save the resampled, 600 dpi version.
Open in IrFan, check dpi, it reports 600 as expected:
Re-open the same file in Photopaint, check resample dialog. Photopaint says it's still 180dpi...:
me again :-)I found out that when I change the dpi of the picture in another programm (I use GNU, a free download programm) and then open it again in Photo-Paint, the new dpi also shows up here! very strange thing Oh well, I'm glad I found a solution!!
Can yuo attach a jpeg I can try to resample and see wht the problem is?I resample a lot.
May I also ask if you do have Photo-Paint X5 with SP1 installed?
Hi Stefan
The test I did above was on X5 with SP1. Did you see what I did to test? I think what I described will happen with any jpg that contains dpi info in EXIF metadata.
I will do another test later using a jpg that has zero EXIF data (meaning I'll create one from scratch not use one from my camera) & see what happens, but the behavior I demonstrate above is pretty wierd. It certainly makes it *seem* like the resample didn't work.
[edit]
I uploaded a jpg from my camera, it's almost 5MB so I put it here: http://freedom-works.com/temp/resample-me.jpg
Also, I tested resampling jpg files I made from scratch by using print-screen & creating new from clipboard in PP, these files don't show the odd behavior described above.
I realize this wasn't my thread to start, but I sure wish some of the gurus here would chime in.
Not that I do this process that often but it's mind boggling to go through this...I mean, you KNOW you changed the DPI & saved but when re-opening PP makes it seem like you didn't... so odd. And it's been this way for many versions.
Well, no more input at all eh? It's almost enough to make one think they are nuts. Here's this very weird behavior (seen it for years too), but even with nice troubleshooting description & screencaps there is no
a) acknowledgment that it's funky
or
b) explanation of why it's not funky
oh well. At least I didn't just type "bump"
