Cannot install Graphics Suite X4 under Windows 7 64-bit

I've been trying to install CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 under Win 7 64-bit.

Part way through the install I get an error message that says "The file "propschemareg64.exe" is not marked for installation" (in two places), and at the end "Fatal error during installation". The install process tells me it is actually installing to the /programs/x86 directory, which is for 32-bit programs, so I assume that is correct..

I contacted Corel support and they simply say "X4 is not supported under windows 7" and that's it. No further help.

I previously had this program running under Windows XP (32-bit) but I recently updated my computer to Win 7 64-bit..

I've successfully installed my earlier CorelDRAW Essentials (v9) in Win 7, and for the time being this will suit me. However, I have a number of X4 files that I need to work on and v9 will not allow me to open them. Does anyone know of a way of fooling with the X4 files so that I can import them into v9?

Alternatively, can anyone help with making X4 Suite run under Windows7 64-bit? In particular, the specific install error message I am getting?

Clear all temp files, reboot and try again.

It's never been mentioned before as an issue so it is unique to you.

How do I clear Temp files?

I've tried this install several times with the same result.

I contacted Corel support about it before christmas and they suggested trying a couple of things, but I had to give it up due to lack of time. At the time I was having a problem with my computers RAM and I thought that might be related. I've now got the RAM sorted out so I'm back on the case.

When I contacted Corel support this time I got the reply  "X4 is not supported by Windows 7" and nothing else. Why did they help me before christmas and nothing now? Just trying to sell the upgrade to X5 I guess. Why does v9 run OK? v9 will do what I need but I need to open some v14 files and v9 won't allow me to import them.

To clean out the Temp directory, click on the Start icon, and then on "Run...". In the Run dialog box, enter '%temp%' (without the quote signs) and click OK. This will bring up Windows Explorer, pointing to the system Temp directory. Delete as many files and sub-directories as possible (Windows will not allow you to delete any active temp file/directory). Then empty your trash-can.

You can try to run the X4 install as compatible mode of Windows XP.

That's very kind of you to offer George, but I'm going to try installing the X4 suite onto my laptop (running XP) and see if I can access them that way.

I know that once I've opened them I have the option to re-save them in a different (earlier) format.

There are only a couple of files I need soon, but I'm not sure how many v14 format I have in total.

I've done this but I'm still not absolutely clear what to do. Do I just delete files that are in the "Temp" folder (which in any case is empty), or do I delete ALL the folders and everything else that appears?. Most of the folders seem to be empty but some contain .exe files and there is also a load of .TMP, .sql, .log and other files I have no idea of what the function is.

I installed X4 Suite OK on my laptop, so I can at least open and copy the files I need using that.

Hello Brian G; In the "Windows" dir. there is a sub dir.called "Temp" programs use that temp dir to wright to while it's runing and they can make othere dir. also you are safe to del anything thing that ends with ".tmp". most of the time the programs will delete the files for you but not all the time. ( It's a good idea to clean the "Temp" dir. at every so often.)

The only mention of this error on Google is this thread. Something out of the ordinary is wrong.

That means to sort it out you are in deep dodo.

You should probably work through issues from the bottom up.

Disk check

Memory check

Virus Scan

Make sure that no anti-virus software in stopping the file installation

Turn off DEP -- System Properties / Performance Option

Run the installer in Admin mode by right clicking the setup program

And if all that fails repair the windows installation.

I'd like to thank everyone for their responses so far.

I built a new system a while ago, which is when I installed Windows 7 64-bit. This was a fresh install on a brand new hard drive. The Corel X4 suite was one of the first programs that I installed and I immediately got the "Error 2753. The File 'propschemeareg64.exe' is not marked for installation" message. However, I was initially having a problem with the RAM installed on my system and I thought this may have been affecting the installation of the program. I now have the RAM problem sorted out (one of my banks of brand new, major name, matched set of DDR3 memory was faulty) so I am attempting the installation again, since I need to work on some v14 files I created with the previous (Win XP) installation of the X4 software.

I contacted Corel support when I first experienced the problem and they gave me some suggestions, but since the RAM was still suspect, I thought I should sort that out before I continued further. Now I've contacted Corel a gain, their response is completely different and they are simply saying X4 is not Win 7 compatible - buy the new version (X5) and they don't seem to want to give me any other help, apart from a coupon for a small discount for the upgrade, which still renders it far too expensive to contemplate.

I run Eset NOD32 anti-virus and have also done every type of disk and anti-malware scan that I can think of, but I'm still getting the error message. I've turned off the Eset anti-virus during install, but no different.

I'm not sure what "Turn off DEP -- System Properties / Performance Option" means, can you expand on that please?

I have no reason to believe that my Windows install is faulty and needs repair, since all my other programs are OK. The Win 7 install was a full install from CD onto a fresh HD, not an update of another version of Windows. I've run the Microsoft checking tools and come up with no error reports.

Copying the DVD to my HD and installing it from there was one suggestion that Corel Support made previously, but that makes no difference.

"I assume you are using legit versions of both X4 and Win 7". Absolutely! Both genuine licensed and registered programs, installed from CD, not downloads. The X4 is an "upgrade" version, purchased from Amazon, but that only meant that I had to provide the serial number from my previous Corel "Essentials Suite" in order to register it.

Does this mean I should look through the registry  to see if I can find a file called  PropSchemaReg64.exe? I've run a registry cleaner program so I though that might have cleaned out any unwanted residual entries.

I'm next going to try emptying the "temp" directory (I'll make sure I set a restore point first).

As I said previously, I've successfully installed X4 onto my laptop so I can open and convert the files that way, so at least I can work on the job I need to do.

I've cleared my Temp Directory completely - no changes, the install still fails at the same point with the same error message..

In the possibility that there is something wrong with my Windows installation, I've just carried out a "repair" to my Windows installation, which appears to be a complete reinstall, since I had to reactivate Windows afterwards (not to mention reinstall a bunch of programs). I've updated my ATI graphics driver, scanned for errors, malware and virus. All the latest Windows updates have been applied.  During the Windows set-up I got a message that said something like "NET Framework 4 has an error and needs to be repaired". It appeared to be repairing the files and then I had an OK message.

I tried the CorelDRAW X4 installation yet again, and I received the same error message again at the same points in the install.

I'm completely out of ideas on this. It appears to be a problem unique to my system but because Corel say X4 is not Win 7 compatible they are not interested in helping, which is very frustrating and annoying.

EDIT:

As a test, I've downloaded Corel X5 suite as a trial. Part of the way through the install I get exactly the same message "Error 2753. The File 'propschemeareg64.exe' is not marked for installation"

What the heck do I do next? As has been pointed out, it seems to be a problem specific to my system, but I've now reinstalled Windows so where do I go from here?

I had the same problem. This is how I fixed it.

Create a new administrator user account. Log off and then log on using the new account. Install Coral X4. That is it!

If you have had a RAM issue then anything is possible.

Usually 90% of RAM issues I've seen are fixed by gently rubbing the contact with a pencil rubber. It is either residue from manufacturing or slight oxidation of the contacts caused when the metal of the contracts and the RAM slots are different (which is normal).

You can have a RAM error that will only effect some operations that hit a particular point in RAM or a specific type of memory function.

You need to run a RAM test and let it do many passes over night to be sure.

I've seen this where a computer was unstable but only Norton Anti-virus would not actually run.

Sounds to me like you haven't loaded much on the laptop yet. I'd be guessing that it is one of those damned MS poor practices that you get a laptop with the OS installed and they don't give you a DVD. And if you go a normal DVD it won't take the product code. We should KILL BILL for allowing this. So If I was to say...

  • Do a RAM check
  • Format and reload Win 7

Then I'm not really helping. But that is likely what you need to do for a start.

I agree with trying to set up another administrative account and trying from their. I had an instance where an account corrupted and I could not get into my computer but switching to another account allowed me to.

Also something not mentioned was TRY ANOTHER DISK.  I had trouble with a expensive EFI Fiery Printer install  - it installed but corrupted within a week, every week for months. Xerox Re-installed a couple times, I a couple times, they replaced hard drive, still did it. Finally they mirrored a hard drive from a known good print server and that worked, at that time they also brought me new disks. Its good it was the second unit I bought from them - had it been the first I would have sent it back - also good they worked through it till it worked - so I would pay for it.

In the Linux world I've seen a few times where they do a verification checksum to make sure a program is correct after download - SMEserver is one. The first part of the install the program verifies its 100% as intended before continuing  to install - if software companies did this they could probably get by with 5% fewer technicians.

 

 

 

 

 

When you say "the same problem", do you mean the same error message ( "The file "propschemareg64.exe" is not marked for installation" ) or a general installation error?

This is (was) a newly built system and I am the sole user/administrator. I cannot see how a new administrator account can affect the installation of a single file from a suite of thousands. I have been very busy and I haven't had time to deal with this problem. Corel support say I should call their support line and talk directly with them, but I just haven't had the time to do that yet, and I've found a way to work around the problem of accessing my v14 files (see below).

I originally had a RAM problem but the faulty RAM has now been replaced, so that can be ruled out.

In order to access my X4 files I've installed the X4 suite on my laptop (running XP 32-bit), where it installed without problems.This rules out any possibility of the X4 Suite disk being faulty. Using the laptop I have been able to access my Corel 14 files and then re-save them in v9 format, so I can now open them in my earlier Corel  version 9, which runs fine on my 64-bit W7 desktop system.
