I have a group of images that I am working on in Corel Draw x5. They are drawings, I scanned them as black/white images then used the "outine trace to clipart" feature to get good images. I want to thicken the lines but if I use the outline pen tool to change the thickness it draws a box around my images. Is there a way to thicken the lines without getting the box?

I think that because you've outline-traced the image, it has also traced your background. It is currently white and without an outline, so you aren't seeing it. But it is also part of your group and therefore if you add an outline to the group, you also add an outline to your background.
The easiest answer is to add your outline to the group, ungroup it and then you will be able to delete the white background objects.
