I'm interested in seeing how a couple of images on the Galleries were created so that i can use these techniques myself, but every time i click to download 'original file', i just get a jpg preview. Is there any reason for this?

All the galleries are JPG, because is only for view. Some artists allows to share the original file, but other don't want this. Simply, send a message to the author and ask for the original file. Also, some people can send you infomation about techniques and effects applied on each job
