I'm new to this group, I go by Keener, thanks for reading this.
I use a laser cutter to make numbers and crests for hockey jerseys. Just started using Corel to design mostly letters and numbers. I'm not sure about the best/quickest way to make a border around the numbers in a specific size then be able to separate them both so I can cut them in different colours.

I use an Epilog and 2 Xenetech laser engravers and do cut outs all the time. I have used the following to help explain my process (and I use images instead of text but the process remains the same):
