I am working with floor plans that probably originated in AutoCAD, that I imported into DRAW X5 (15.2.0.695) from PDF. As is typical, there are thousands of hairline curves, almost all as outline segments. In this particular plan there are 13,316. There are no bitmaps and no text. File size is 1,238 KB.
The M6500, as can be seen from my signature description, is a machine that is made for this kind of stuff. It runs the Suite great; starts up in under 2 seconds. However, when I attempt to select all objects in the file mentioned above, it appears to select objects one-by-one rapidly through all the objects for about 4 seconds, then start over again. It continues through this "loop" without ever stopping and making a selection. I seem to be able to successfully select around 8k objects.
What's odd is that the two XP machines make a selection of all objects almost instantly. The M70 struggles transforming the selection, but hey, it's almost 10 years old! I'm rather astounded that the Optiplex 780, being just a general office computer, handles darn near anything I throw at it and it handles this file without sweating.
I have done much searching to no avail with this issue. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
Does help > about show either 15.2.0.686 or 15.2.0.695? If it does not, you should have X5 SP3
You may have automatic updates to Win 7, but that may miss updates to .net unless they have major security implications. X5 I think requires .net 3.5 which you can install from http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=21
Thanks for the reply harryLondon.
I am up-to-date: 15.2.0.695 and .NET 3.5 SP1 (as well as 4.5.1).
I have found that running as administrator or XP compatibility will select all, however it's still slow.
Still digging and hoping for other additional guidance.
Is it convenient to make several groups of 20 to 1000 objects, rather than having everything as individual objects?
internally, there may be no more "work" involved in selecting a group of objects than a single object.
Thanks for hanging in there with me harryLondon!
As a test, that's a great idea and it is successful.
But this is my "flagship" machine and theoretically should be kicking the others' butts! The fact that my dinosaur can do it and this one can't just irks the you-know-what out of me!
Still researching. Running as Admin does not work consistently, but Compatibility Mode seems to. There is an instance of csrss.exe that runs along with DRAW (both at 2-5% CPU) when attempting the selection. Not sure what to make of that yet. When making the selection in Compatibility Mode, the initial memory usage is around 170 MB and when the "dots" stop moving and the bounding squares are stable, the CPU will go to 13% and the memory usage will start climbing by around 3-4 MB per second until it reaches 250 MB when the selection is actually made. This is determined by the Object Manager finally highlighting the objects in its panel and the status bar reporting the number of objects. The CPU will then drop to 0, but the memory will remain at 250 MB until focus is taken away from DRAW (I went to Task Manager, which I had on top) whereupon it will drop back to the initial memory of around 170 MB.
When not running Compatibility Mode, the initial memory is around 90 MB. Only this time when attempting the selection, it shows as Not Responding as the "dots" march across it for about 10 seconds. When the message disappears, the memory begins its climb at the same rate as above, but when it reaches 170 MB, it just goes into the "loop" and never makes a selection. CPU for DRAW and csrss.exe stay at 2-5% throughout.
I will get some stats from the work machine and see how they compare. Might give a clue.
It was the aero theme. When I changed to W7 basic or classic, all is well.
Are there any downsides to using the classic theme? I like the extra real estate.
