This weapon ended up being the Klingon phaser. It was originally used in the Taste of Armageddon episode of the Classic Star Trek. It was spiffed up, modified some and given to the Klingons. Interesting design which was essentially carried over to the movies. Though the movie phasers looked very different, they still had the look.
