Vector Maps

I need to make a lot of maps. Does anyone know of a source for vector maps e.g. US and Mexico, US and Canado etc?

  • Some Canadian provinces (particularly Quebec) and some states, have excellent PDFs of their highway maps (Alberta, to my embarrassment, does not--but having finally fired the Tourism Director maybe things will change). Some Tourism/Highway sites require a LOT of navigating to get to the maps, though.

Quebec's PDF maps are mostly excellent, except near Montreal and Ottawa valley which seem to be older and are a hybrid of vector and bit maps, but outside of those two or three maps they are pure vector. Unfortunately all maps I have found cover only a small area but the entire province is covered by the many maps available.

Ontario's come in corrupted in many cases (don't know why) with a white overlay hiding everything. When importing PDFs that look blank, switch to wire frame mode, and usually everything can be seen, then delete the offending white (or black) rectangle on top and you should be in good shape.

Either New Brunswick or Nova Scotia maps sometimes employ a "Type 3" font which comes in at several hundred times its proper size (if it was 9 point it may come in at about 1000 point size!)--not significant--just delete it.

Also try Atlas of Canada with fairly basic PDF maps by province/territory

Quebec road maps mentioned above--navigation STARTS at

(trust me, many clicks later you DO get a PDF!)
