Yes. Select all, create boundary then apply the contour. I forget which heading create boundary is under though.

Sometimes the contour feature benefits from reducing the number of nodes in a curve. Imported curves such as from Adobe Illustrator can cause a lot of problems when most places you don't need that many nodes. If the contour option goes haywire again, you can do it another way. Duplicate the page and make a raster of this item, take it into PhotoPaint, and select and expand the selection how much you want. fill it, save it and then vector trace it. It will work for the background you need as you are working with a feather file. Might be the best workaround. It will look right anyway and won't drive your computer crazy or get some sort of weird vector lines into infinity which are hard to get rid of.
