PDF Quality Issue

I am currently using CorelDraw x5 on Win 7 Professional O/S. I have been a Corel user for +10 years so I have done multiple upgrades to get to this version and for what I use it for it suits me fine.

There is one fundamental shortcoming which is its pdf engine. I have done a side by side test of creating a document in MS Word 2007 and then save it as pdf.

When I take the same document, import it into Corel, the quality of the fonts and graphics are inferior. Specifically, fonts in Corel are "wavy" and not crisp and clean. Ironically, MS word produces a better looking document.

I have tried all variations of settings to make the quality of documents at least equivalent to MS word saved as pdf in its output quality but to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a work around?

We need a little more information. For example, if when you import the PDF, you choose "fonts" or "convert to curves". And What settings are you using for create the PDf on MS Word.

Here are the exact steps.

I create a document in MS Word 2007 as a .doc file extension.

In CorelDraw X5:

I open a new 8 1/2 X 11 blank page.

Import the .doc file with the default settings in the dialog box > click Import

On the importing dialog box I keep the default settings (maintain fonts and settings, force CMYK black, import tables as tables) > click OK

To publish as .pdf I click on File > Publish to pdf (select pdf preset as Document Distribution)

If after I take each document without adding any graphical elements they are quite different.

The MS word pdf has the fonts as black ( RGB:000 or #000000)

The CorelDraw pdf has the fonts as gray (RGB: 646464 or #404040)

The MS Word pdf fonts have clean edges resembling a vector graphic when zoomed in.

The CorelDraw pdf has irregular edges with wavy /scalloped edges when zoomed in.

If I want to embed a vector graphic for a logo in the CorelDraw pdf and publish it, the edges of the logo are wavy and scalloped when you zoom in to look closely.

If I change the pdf settings to "export all text as curves" the font distortion is more pronounced.

I have experimented with various output settings but it should not have to be this hard. The primary reason I would use Corel vs. Word is the ease of layout and the opportunity to use vector graphics like a logo into the document.

Hi Peter,
If the fonts are ok when you zoom in in CorelDraw, you might be able to get a better result if you convert all fonts, cirkels, etc. to curves in CorelDraw - before you export to *.pdf

or try this (print to file):
