Just when I thought Publish to PDF was my workaround for the Scale with Object issue, I realized after opening the pdf in Illustrator that it still doesn't work even though the pdf looks ok in Acrobat. I'm going to go broke if this doesn't get fixed soon.
My workflow is that I need to supply an ai file preferably with the strokes in tact, and it sure would be sweet if the strokes would stay the same width.
Attached is a file showing what happens with the workaround that doesn't work.

I tried several of the same scenarios and confirm that this would be a big pia. Got best results when importing the pdf then export as ai file. Only one line weight was different.
Sorry to hear you cannot find a way to make it work. Strange that the outlines look perfect in the PDF but do not open correctly in Illustrator. After all, PDF is Adobe's own format. Not what you want to hear Joan, but don't expect any fix until X8, and maybe not even then. Personally I have always avoided Scale with Object, ever since I started using Draw a hundred years ago. Not sure why, I just never trusted them to scale correctly. It still seems like a good decision. ;-) I sometimes use it temporarily, when I do have an outline and must scale it with the object. Prefer to remove it afterwards though.
