I see that drop shadows are now done with Gaussian blur but does X8 allow for the Gaussian blur effect on objects themselves (like Inkscape and other vector applications support)?Also, can the drop shadows be modified if they are separated from their parent object? Are they an SVG object or are they still a bitmap object?

Until Corel wake up and realise they are getting left behind. One day they'll wake up and wonder why they have so few customers.
Awhile back I spoke with Corel support and the rep was vague about answering this. He would say that items exported from Draw as SVG adhere to the SVG 1.1 standard. But when pressed about items imported using the same standard he admitted that that was not the case.

Drop shadow are rectangles with a custom transparency, and yes, you can copy it from the drop shadow (after separate it) to another object, then adjust it.
Also, you can use Mesh Fill to create the same effect (on all sides or just 2 or 3 sides)
