X8 won't let me amend a TTF file with new characters?

I have some home grown True Type Fonts and I wanted to amend them with some new characters, this works fine in X7 but when I try in X8 it overwrites the whole font with only the new character I'm trying to add and I loss all the other characters in the type set.

Is this a bug or am I missing something?
