Windows 10 Creator Update versus Fonts and Corel Manager X8 / Bitstream Font Navigator 17 [X7]

Re: Windows 10 Pro > 1703.15063.13 [Creators Update]
CorelDRAW & Corel Font Manager X8 18.1.0.661
Two very similar i7 [2700K] Desktops systems but totally separate

Hope I am not committing a mortal sin by coping my post from the CDGS X18 section, which has not yet received a precise reply in relation to the 'Creators Update' of Windows 10.

I have experimented with the Creator's Update [Windows 10 Pro 1703.15063.13]. On both systems I found that installed fonts were retained only within a session that was put to 'Sleep'. 'Shutdown' and 'Restart' resulted in the loss of all installed fonts [not deleted], except Windows Protected System Fonts.

Corel Font Manager X8 would fail to correctly display fonts installed from Groups in Bitstream Font Navigator 17 [X7] — until all the Groups were uninstalled / reinstalled. But these would again be lost with a Shutdown or Restart.

I am most anxious to learn if others are experiencing this problem? I find it hard to imagine that it has not been reported yet and therefore am inclined to conclude that it is an artifact of the upgrade process from my two Windows 10 1607s. To that end, I downloaded a Batch File from Windows TenForums to clear Windows font cache. It ran on Creators Update [1703] but failed to resolve the issue.

Of course, I imaged both 1607 systems prior to running the Creators Update and have now restored both computers to the Anniversary Update: Windows 10 Pro 1607.14393.969, in which — on both computers — there are no font issues and Corel Font Manger X8 / Bitstream Font Navigator 17 [X7] operate normally.

I have download but not installed CorelDRAW 2017, not wishing to complicate the issue.

Grateful for suggestions!

  • I'm pulling my hair own dealing with a fiasco involving Font Manager X8 on two Windows 10 Pro systems. One of them is my work desktop PC and the other is my notebook at home. MS pushed Windows 10 Creators Update to both systems a couple weeks ago. But this font issue just started hitting hard yesterday. Basically nearly all the fonts I installed on these computers are uninstalled. Only the fonts bundled in the OS and fonts bundled with Adobe CC applications are present.

Corel Font Manager X8 is still showing all the missing fonts, but the font preview under each font name is changed to Arial. I'm having to go through and uninstall all of those fonts out of CFM. I've tried deleting the font database in C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Corel\FontDatabase\V1 to see if that could flush out any corrupted data, but it doesn't work.

Another aggravating thing: some of the fonts I install directly through Windows' own font installation setup still won't appear in CorelDRAW X8. That's pretty infuriating. They're valid fonts and they show up in other applications.

My own opinion is Corel should seriously consider getting rid of Corel Font Manager. Its performance is absolutely terrible. It slows CorelDRAW X8 down to a crawl. It takes way too long for X8 to launch and it also takes way too long for X8-generated .CDR files to open. The year is 2017, but this stuff reminds me how slow and primitive computers were in the late 1980's. If CorelDRAW is going to survive against the growing onslaught of the Adobe monopoly it simply cannot afford technical problems like this. I've already been using Adobe Illustrator alongside CorelDRAW for many years and issues like this will force me to get a lot more of my work done in that rival program. I prefer doing my sign design work in CorelDRAW, but I can't get my work done if I'm going to be fighting something as simple as freaking fonts not showing up in the font menu.
