I have installed the 32-bit version of PhotoPaint X3 on my Win 7 64-bit machine, and, so far, it seems to be functioning OK. It is only a minor niggle, but, although I have associated several bitmap formats, like .tif and .jpg both in PhotoPaint itself and in Default Programs/Associate a file type, in Explorer/List View only the generic icon is displayed (a plain white sheet of paper) rather than PP`s icon, even for .cpt extensions, although PP`s icon displays next to the "Open" button in the Explorer toolbar if I select an associated file format. I have tried all manner of ways to rectify this, including rebuilding the IconCache.db, but without success. Is this a 32-bit program versus a 64-bit O/S thing which I shall have to live with, or is there a way to get PP`s icon back where it belongs, please?
Thanks

The problem, here, lies in the fact that PP X3 is over eight years old. That is long before Windows 7. The latest Windows that X3 was qualified for (If I Recall Correctly) is Vista. So, you can expect a few inconsistencies.
That said, let's try something that hopefully will at least associate the PP icon with bitmaps.
First, make sure that all bitmaps of interest (*.CPT, etc.) are defaulted to open with PhotoPaint.
If that does not give you something other than the generic paper sheet icon, then put the X3 DVD in the drive and when the install memu comes up, select 'Repair'.
Outside of those two items, I can not think of anything else that may help, in this case.
Thanks for the suggestion, Hugh, but I have tried that, with no change.
I like X3. it does everything I want it to (photo editing mostly) and when I have thought about upgrading, a comparison usually shows that later versions have improvements/additions to Draw and PP is the poor relation. I would only seriously consider upgrading if HSL has been made much more reliable and/or Effects/Perspective interactive. I have a Win XP machine with Corel Graphics Suite X3 installed and I do most of my photo editing in there, so the incorrect icon association in Win 7 is a very minor thing, but it feels like an itch that I cannot scratch!
There may be some missing registry settings.
I don't have X3 to check, but I would expect the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cpt\OpenWithProgids to have a value of CorelPHOTOPAINT.Image.13 with a type of reg_binary.
I checked registry in both XP and Win 7 :
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cpt does not have OpenWithProgids in either O/S, just ShellNew and (Default) CorelPhotoPaint.Image.13, but In XP the PP icon is used in Windows Explorer, Details and List View, whereas in Win 7 it is the generic icon.
I checked .jpg and .tif which I have also associated with PP in both O/Ss :
In XP HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithProgids has CorelPhotoPaint.Image.13 with (zero length binary value) and Windows Explorer uses the PP icon in Details and List View. Ditto with .tif
Both registry entries are the same in Win 7 but the PP icon is missing in Details and List View.
I thought of uninstalling/reinstalling PP X3 in Win 7, but, on reflection, it is probably not worth doing. I have now arranged the GUI as I like it, so as long as the program functions properly, I will leave things as they are.
Thanks for trying to resolve this, though, Harry.
There are some settings in control panel > folder options that you may want to compare or alter:
