I've tried all the settings that should work to associate jpgs with PP, but not of them are working. This is for PP 2018 in Windows 10 64-bit. Does anyone know of a work-around or something I might not have thought of so far? Thanks.
Paint 3D is part of the Windows creators update. If the instructions I gave you do not work you have an issue with Windows itself. The commands I gave you are direct commands in the operating system.
So I had forgotten I could set file associations from within PP, so I went there and did that. Sure enough, as soon as I closed Paint, I began to get Windows error messages saying something like 'An app caused a problem with .*** file extension so the default has been set back to Photos.' This p****es me off in the worst way. Microsoft simply isn't going to let me change the file associations for these file types. I'm on Win 10 Pro, Build 1803. Any ideas?
I would reset PP not to have the settings you changed to so the Windows errors go away. Assuming that you're running as an administrator you should be able to choose a different application for BMP, JPG or others, I can in Windows 10 Pro all latest updates.. With that said I wonder if a Windows update might reset those buggers? I say that because Windows 10 is so integrated with apps and the Edge Browser.
David, I literally did not have a choice to choose any other app than what was in their list. I could go to the'Windows App' store and find an app there, but obviously I won't be doing that. Windows immediately sets all .bmp, .jpg, .tif, pretty much any image file back to Paint. I found a registry hack and so far, it's working. As soon as I hacked the registry to tell it not to use Paint, when I right-clicked on my JPG file, finally PP was in the list and I could choose it and also tell it to make this the default for these files.
This is the procedure I followed, even though the instructions are for a different app. But it seems to work for any app you want to remove from automatically being the default app for that file extension.
