Where do I install gms macros in CorelDraw 2018? Do macros for previous version of CorelDraw work with CorelDraw 2018?
Windows 10
Your "user" GMS folder is:
C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Roaming\Corel\CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2017\Draw\GMS
By default, that will be a hidden folder. There is plenty of information on-line about how to get there. Here's one article: What's in the hidden Windows AppData Folder, and how to find it if you need it.
Some older macros will work fine in 2018; some won't. It depends on the macro.
In CorelDraw 2018 the GMS does not exist in that location. Here is an image of my C:\Users\Bill\AppData\Roaming\Corel\CorelDRAW Graphics Suite 2018 folder:
I tried creating the GMS folder in this location, but it didn't work.
I tried to load the macro through Options>Customization>Commands>Macros, but it didn't list the macro.
I'm currently having this argument with HMRC and their tax app. Basic PAYE Tools, that stores its database in Users. Which of course is hidden, and of course then cannot easily be backed up by backup software (Genie 9 here, about to dump it as its buggy as hell) .Their argument is their software does automatically back up the database, but guess where? Yes a subfolder in Users !! Unbelievable. You can manually backup the database but an professional will tel you manual backups are a recipe for data loss. No backup should ever be left to manual intervention, it should be automatic.
My argument is that this database location should be user configurable and so should the GMS folder. There is no reason for the GMS folder not to be shared between versions. Forcing the user to get brutal with WIndows in order to find your macros, then backing them up is a recipe for distress come hardware failure time. My data (which includes macros) is precious, much more precious than Corel think it should be (hence their attitude to pre v6 files), so I have 4 levels of backup. RAID on a NAS for primary hardware protection, Synch (actually contribute) to another HDD daily for secondary hardware protection, which then gets backed up to the cloud. Finally daily backups to ext HDD that get rotated offsite.
IMO a users data should NEVER be placed in ANY folder within the OS system. Who in their right mind would sort through the OS to find the various pieces of data scattered in Users and elswhere in order to flag it for backup. And who would routinely backup the whole OS? An occasional image maybe but not daily file backups.
