I used to have a cross hatch macro for cross hatching in X8. This is not compatible with 2018. Is there a way to do this without the macro?

I haven't used it much, but in my limited testing, Alexander Penkin's HatchFill macro appears to work in 2018.
You might also get very nice results using a vector pattern fill. In this thread - Convert VECTOR pattern to editable vector objects? - I have a video walking through the creation of such a fill.
Whether one approach or the other is better for you will depend in part on your specific needs.
