When you say "merge" do you mean "combine"?If you create a bunch of rectangles and then Weld (Object > Shaping > Weld) them together instead, there shouldn't be any "unnecessary" lines to remove.You can also use Boundary (same menu as Weld) to create a "cut line" around selected objects.Not sure this was what you asked for. If not, please give us some more details.
