New custom brushes appears with an empty name in the brush menu

Hi,

I defined 2 custom brushes in PP2020 and they appear really strangely in the menu. They appear with no names:

While they are defined with a name in the brushes.ini file:

Do you have the same behaviour ?

  • Yes, I get the same result in PP version 2021. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to fix this. You might search the forums for info. I know we talked about issues with custom brushes several years ago. Do a search for "nibs" or "custom brushes."

I do recall that if you want to organize your brushes in groups, it's probably best to start by loading an "empty nib" file for each category. One of the past threads mentions this. For example, I have nib groups called sparkle-glints.nib...grunge.nib...clouds-smoke.nib, etc.

I still use this same emptyNIB.nib file in PP2021. It's just a nib file with only one dot nib in it (you'll see this one dot nib in the drop down nib list instead of all those default nibs). Makes it easier to find yours!  Another user named Alfred shared this many years ago -- it still works! I've uploaded it to Dropbox if you want to give it a try. It won't help with the seeing your brush names...but it will make it a little easier to find your custom brushes. You can reset the nibs to default whenever you need to.

With PP closed, place the emptyNib.nib file in the PP Workspace folder (and keep a backup copy of the empty nib file somewhere OUTSIDE of PP...just in case!). Then in Photo-Paint, use Nib Load on the Brush settings docker to load it. Then immediately, use the "Nib Save As" on the Brush settings docker to rename it for your group or category of brushes. This will save to your user Workspace folder. Now save some brushes and they will appear in the Nib drop down list after the original dot brush.

    emptyNib.nib

Like I said before...it's been awhile since I have saved a custom brush, but I think I have the steps correct.
