I have created a text object and selected Extrude from Effects but all x & y mesurements are greyed out so can't set extrusion. It is Arial text selected
Convert it to curves.

My guess is that it is the same if you try to add an Extrude to any object, right?I believe there is a bug in the Extrude docker and the controls don't come alive until you have created an extrude with the Interactive Extrude tool (hidden in the Shadow tool flyout).
