Selecting the center of a busy object?

Is there some magic way to select (pick up) the center of an object that has a lot of nodes crisscrossing the center?  I have to zoom way in to select the center but then cannot move the object far because I am zoomed.

Thanks!

  • To select the center of a busy object, try identifying the area that draws the most attention or the part that is most symmetrical. Using visual cues like edges, patterns, or natural focal points can make it much easier to pinpoint the true center.

  • You can edit the detailed snap settings, and only leave specific types of snaps active. That still might not work for you, depending on how busy the object is (e.g., there might be other "centers" that are still too close to the center you want to use).

If you are using CorelDRAW in Windows, then another, more involved way to carry out a very specific "move" operation would be to use my Match Vectors macro. You would create Source and Target vectors (2-node lines) to define the start and end locations of the move, and you could set up each of those when zoomed in as closely as you need to be to accurately pick up the features you are using as reference snap points.

Here's a video showing how the macro might be used for setting up a "move" operation.

That might seem like a lot of work, but it's something that one can get pretty quick at with some practice.

  • You can avoid fighting the internal nodes by drawing a quick rectangle around the object, selecting that rectangle, turning on Snap to Centers, and using the rectangle’s clean center point to move the object accurately. Delete the rectangle when finished.
