CorelDRAW silently crashes on startup – Font database corruption fix (no reinstall required)

Problem / Symptoms

CorelDRAW (and related Corel apps) may:

  • Show the splash screen briefly, then silently exit

  • Crash during “Initializing application” or similar startup phase

  • Not show any error message or crash dialog

  • Continue to crash even after:

    • Reinstalling CorelDRAW

    • Resetting the workspace (Ctrl+F8)

    • Running as Administrator

    • Disabling GPU / antivirus

    • Creating a new Windows user (temporarily works)

    • Repair installs or clean reinstalls

In some cases, CorelDRAW may later refuse to install or throw Error 19 after repeated repair/uninstall attempts.

Root Cause

The issue is caused by a corrupted font entry in Corel’s Font Database.

Corel Font Manager may detect the problematic font and log it in a file called:

QuarantinedFontFiles.txt

However, Corel does not actually quarantine or disable the font.
On every Corel application startup, the font database is rebuilt or checked, reloading the same corrupted font again — causing a crash loop.

The Fix (Safe, fast, non-destructive)

This solution preserves:

  • Workspaces

  • Customizations

  • Macros

  • CorelDRAW configuration

Steps

  1. Open:

    %appdata%\Roaming\Corel\Databases\
  2. Open the versioned folder:

    • CorelDRAW 2025: V7.0

    • CorelDRAW 2019: V3.1

    • (Version number may vary slightly depending on release)

  3. Locate and open:

    QuarantinedFontFiles.txt
  4. Identify the font or font folder listed and remove it from your system
    (or temporarily move it elsewhere)

  5. In the same folder, delete:

    FontDatabase.sqlitedb
  6. Launch any Corel application
→ Corel will automatically rebuild the font database

Heavy check mark CorelDRAW should now start normally.

What NOT to do

Before trying this fix, avoid:

  • Reinstalling CorelDRAW

  • Resetting the workspace

  • Deleting user profiles

  • Running registry cleaners

  • Disabling antivirus or GPU acceleration

  • Performing Windows repairs or OS reinstalls

These steps do not fix the root cause and often make recovery harder.

Benefits of this Fix

  • No loss of workspace or settings

  • No reinstall required

  • Fixes silent crashes instantly

  • Works across CorelDRAW versions

  • Identifies the actual problematic font

  • Prevents future crash loops

Closing

This issue cost me many hours of troubleshooting before discovering the real cause.
I hope this post saves others from unnecessary reinstalls and system damage.

If CorelDRAW crashes silently on startup — check the font database first.
