Why does CorelDRAW misinterpret embedded PNG transparency when importing PDFs?

Hi all!

When importing PDF files into CorelDRAW, PNG images that include transparency sometimes appear with a solid white or grey background instead of maintaining their transparent areas. I am using PDFs exported from Illustrator and InDesign with the “Preserve Transparency” option enabled.

I need to understand exactly which CorelDRAW import settings or PDF export options cause this behavior, and how to ensure that the transparency is preserved correctly during import. Does CorelDRAW require a specific PDF version, color mode, or transparency flattening option to handle this properly? I'm mostly using simple pictures of bouquets for a flower company in Germany, nothing too complex, yet the results seems unstable on my end.

Thanks for any ideas you may have.

  • This usually happens when the PDF is flattened or saved as PDF/X-1a; try exporting as PDF/X-4 from Illustrator/InDesign and keep “live transparency” intact, then import into CorelDRAW with native PDF handling enabled. Also check that color management is set to RGB/CMYK consistency between apps. It’s a bit like how door to door pet relocation services rely on controlled step-by-step handling so nothing gets “flattened” or lost in transit.

  • The transparency issue occurs because CorelDRAW often struggles to interpret PDF "flattens" or CMYK-converted transparency masks from Adobe products. To ensure your flower bouquets remain transparent, export from Illustrator or InDesign using the PDF/X-4 standard or Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4) or higher, as these versions support "live" transparency rather than flattening it into solid white blocks. Additionally, verify that your export color space matches the original PNGs (typically RGB), as forcing a CMYK conversion during export is the primary cause of the "grey box" effect. If a file still imports with a solid background, you can quickly fix it within CorelDRAW by selecting the image and using the Bitmaps > Bitmap Color Mask tool to sample and hide the background color.
