There is a way to draw a line and then use the shape tool to pull a second curved line outward from it, thus creating a shape. I've fiddled with it for quite a while, and I can't figure out what I did to accomplish this. Thanks!

The Contour tool can do what I think you are describing.
You can then Break Apart the Contour group to get independent shapes, if that's what you need.

Useful, for instance, if you initially set the straight line along a vertical guide, pull out the curve as above, then mirror the new shape on the other side of the guide. Quick route to a symmetrical shape.
