The green button misdirection seems to be on numerous websites these days Phil.
Be very careful. There used to be a song long ago asking what's behind the Green Door. Now you know.
It is common these days to have lots of download buttons which only 1 is linked to the programme you want and even then I never do auto installs only custom ones so I can un-tick or choose not to install if there are 'extras' with it.
PUP stands for Potentially Unwanted Programmes - they aren't necessarily malicious but if you have not knowing installed them they have no right to be there.
I downloaded portable FS from Snapfiles yesterday with no problems and have just run Malwarebytes to make sure.
You can get Malwarebytes free but you need to un-tick the auto checked 'Trial' box on install.

Firefox has an addon called World of Trust which people can use to warn others about dishonest web sites. If you try to visit a site that other users have adversely tagged, the firefox addon will warn you and you can decide whether to visit the site or look somewhere else for the material.
The safest answer is usually to go direct to the program author's site and download it from there, but even then you're likely to find spyware such as google chrome or toolbars, surreptitiously installing itself alongside the product unless you are very careful.

Did you try the free version of Malwarebytes? I have not had any issues with the free version when I have popped over to somone's place to clean their computer. It's always cleaned them.
By the way, unless you looked at the time stamps on the PUPs, it is possible some were from previous infections. I see them when cleaning people's computers all the time that have been present for quite some time.
