I have an image I need to print on black shirts but it was given to me as a grey scale. I was wondering when I set it to halftone what the best settings for degrees and lines per inch would be if I were to use a 255 screen with out it coming out pixelated.
Unless you are printing it yourself, I would give the greyscale image to the printing company and let the company choose the appropriate halftone settings. Or at least ask them for their recommendations.
But for a single colour print, I can't think of any reason why the screen angle should be anything other than 45 degrees.
I'm printing it myself in the print shop I work at. It's a personal side project so I'm in charge of the graphics and film.
Hello AL; I haven't done any screen printing in years. For a black shirt I made a white cloud and screened it on the shirt first then screened the graphics. And you should be able to do the conversion In PhotoPaint. If you are doing a heat transfer it's different.

For screen printing you want to use an angle of 22.5 degrees to minimize any moíre pattern with the screen mesh. 45 lpi with round dots will work fine for a 255 screen. Since you are printing white on black you will want to invert the image and you might also do a separate screen (110-160 mesh) for the solid areas of your print. Also, as George said above, you might consider printing a white underbase and overprinting the halftone in black.
Thanks guys, you've been very helpful. I'm trying to learn everything I can about doing art work for my shop.
