How to retain layers when pasting objects into a new document

I could buy I'd have to group the objects by layers, create new layers in the new document and paste each one individually by layers. Unless of course you know a way of grouping that preserves the layers so when you ungroup the layers are retained.
This is really frustrating. I have used illustrator at work and it does this with a toggle and I was hoping Corel had something similar.

couldn't just do a save as and do whatever you need from there. You'd still have the orig and now a "new document"

Okay maybe my description was a little simplistic. Say I am working on a document and I want to add a component from another document or two into the one I am checked working in, can I do it? I'm starting to get the impression that it can't be done.

I had used Corel many years back (been out of it for almost 6 years) and have been using Illustrator at my new company. I purchased a new copy of Corel for home but am still rusty on where things are, new things added and having to switch back and forth. This may be one of those features that maybe on the wishlist.
