For instance, if I have a circle and I want to make 1/16" breaks in the line in 3 or 4 places along the circle, how can I do this? I have tried the eraser tool, but it closes the line up around where I erased.
Convert the circle to curves, select one node and do a line break. Now you can use your trim tool and any object to trim away segments of the line as you please.

Hi, maybe there was something funny with the circle... like it being in a group. The macro works if the shape has subpaths, even multiple nested subpaths. Here's an example. I'll also make a version of macro that allows to pull the variable from a text file for a custom size cutout.
