It ran fine for months, then a couple days ago, it began this crashing when I do "open other" on the welcome screen, or do File>Open from the menu, or click the Open File button.
Just to be clear, the crash is immediate - it is not related to a specific file - you don't get far enough to select a file.
I have tried the F8 reset, and I have uninstalled and re-installed (twice) to no avail.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be the cause (and fix)?

Did you ever get this sorted as we are suddenly plagued with the same problem?
Somehow it sorted itself.
As background, I run Windows in a virtual machine on a Mac (using Parallels).
I can only assume that whatever was broken was fixed by an automatic update to Windows or to Parallels, but that is only a theory. I'm sorry, I don't have any real information to give you, as I was never able to figure out exactly why it started working again.

Oh dear, that is disturbing. I hate not knowing how these things turn out. I have had this happen before a long time ago but only resolved it with a complete computer reformat which takes me days as I am app heavy.
I am insisting I do not reformat this time as it is happening on my other computers as well.
