Windows 10 Creator Update versus Fonts and Corel Manager X8 / Bitstream Font Navigator 17 [X7]

Re: Windows 10 Pro > 1703.15063.13 [Creators Update]
CorelDRAW & Corel Font Manager X8 18.1.0.661
Two very similar i7 [2700K] Desktops systems but totally separate

Hope I am not committing a mortal sin by coping my post from the CDGS X18 section, which has not yet received a precise reply in relation to the 'Creators Update' of Windows 10.

I have experimented with the Creator's Update [Windows 10 Pro 1703.15063.13]. On both systems I found that installed fonts were retained only within a session that was put to 'Sleep'. 'Shutdown' and 'Restart' resulted in the loss of all installed fonts [not deleted], except Windows Protected System Fonts.

Corel Font Manager X8 would fail to correctly display fonts installed from Groups in Bitstream Font Navigator 17 [X7] — until all the Groups were uninstalled / reinstalled. But these would again be lost with a Shutdown or Restart.

I am most anxious to learn if others are experiencing this problem? I find it hard to imagine that it has not been reported yet and therefore am inclined to conclude that it is an artifact of the upgrade process from my two Windows 10 1607s. To that end, I downloaded a Batch File from Windows TenForums to clear Windows font cache. It ran on Creators Update [1703] but failed to resolve the issue.

Of course, I imaged both 1607 systems prior to running the Creators Update and have now restored both computers to the Anniversary Update: Windows 10 Pro 1607.14393.969, in which — on both computers — there are no font issues and Corel Font Manger X8 / Bitstream Font Navigator 17 [X7] operate normally.

I have download but not installed CorelDRAW 2017, not wishing to complicate the issue.

Grateful for suggestions!

  • Two months later:  I have continued experimenting with the Creators Update, now 1703 > 15063.413 on a clean install of Windows 10 aboard a Toshiba Portege Ultrabook. Bitstream Font Navigator 17 [X7] functions and malfunctions in the same way as I earlier described on two desktop systems, installing fonts that remain installed on a per session basis only.

To confirm that this result was a Windows 10 Creators Update issue and not a peculiarity of the Corel software or an artifact of my system(s), I decided to install NexusFont. Although NexusFont [v. 2.6.2 | 2015.11.06] has not been updated in a year-and-a-half, it is still highly regarded … and free.

Extensive testing during the past three weeks demonstrates that NexusFont suffers the same failure to install fonts that ‘stick’ across multiple sessions as the Corel font managers. Of course, as long as NexusFont remains open, the fonts belonging to the selected Library or Collection also remain available to all Windows applications — during that Windows session.

My final test has been with High-Logic's MainType 7, which comes in two flavors and as a highly functional free version. My version is Standard 7.0.0.1032 [March 29, 2017]. After several days, it seems clear that MainType has been updated for compatibility with the Creators Update, as the fonts it installs — or uninstalls and re-installs — remain installed across an indefinite number of Windows sessions.

My conclusion is that the Creators Update has changed the way fonts are installed/registered in Windows 10, possibly an issue of 'permissions'. I have not yet worked with CorelDRAW 2018 and therefore cannot comment on Corel Font Manager 2018's operation with the Creators Update.

I think it would be helpful for Corel staff to join the conversation here and offer their experience with the Creators Update and the several versions of the Corel font managers.
