Re: Closing Curves

Hello everyone,

I am new to CorelDraw and to graphic design in general.  I have been experimenting with CD and got stumped when trying to use fills on objects, specifically curves.  I know you must close a curve before you can apply a fill, but, my question is:  Is there a way to use another curve/path to close a curve.  Basically, I'm trying to freehand some images, thus many curves intersect.  I had been hoping the program would recognized the curves as closed when another curve "graphically closed" it, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work that way.  I have tried combining curves, but it doesn't seem to produce the desired effect.

I'm sorry if my use of terminology is poor.  Thank you in advance.

  • If your combination of more than one curve create an enclosed region Smart Fill will create a new object within the enclosed region.

Not ideal and its a 'one shot' job, you'll have to do it again if you edit any of the bounding curves, but it is a shortcut. There are other ways but you have to understand that open curves cannot have a proper fill, well at least not one thats useful. You'll eventually come to create designs with this knowledge in mind and you'll find you work within this limitation.

I dont want to burden you with too much detail, but if you create your artwork entirely in lineart form, there is a better way to then 'fill all the holes' so to speak. However it doesn't work if you need to retain the original lines. One of the fundamental laws of Vector Graphics, only closed objects can have a fill. Theres only one, very niche, vector design app that automatically creates fills in enclosed regions, but its far too highly specialised for use in proper design work.
  • If your "objects" are created of many lines and curve segments that are not connected, you can not give them a fill.
The easiest way to turn these lines and curves into a closed object is to use Join Curves (docker, can be found in the Object menu).
Select the curves (no need to combine) and adjust the settings in Join Curves to create desired result.
I suggest "Extend" and a small Gap tolerance as a start.

  • Hello mkluke: If you select two nodes that you want joined and with the shape Tool selected you will see on the menue a tool to join the nodes. And you can set it up so that they will auto join when they are within your settings in setup........Ronny has a good idea to.

  • Thanks so much for all the great information. I'll have to try these things once I get home. I had tried to join curves also but maybe I did it wrong. Also, I never noticed the Smart Fill button and I think I had been using Interactive Fill instead. That might be my problem. I'll have to go home and verify. Thanks for everyone's willingness to help a newbie. Happy New Year!
  • Thanks everyone! I realized the problem I was having. The toolbar was only big enough to fit a particular number of icons and the Smart Fill option was hidden. That did the trick. Happy New Year!
