OTF Font Structure: Private Use?

Can anyone educate me or point me to one or more reference(s) the OTF font structure? For instance, I have a font (hello honey) from the DaFont.com website that I'd like to gain access and manipulate in CorelDRAW. CorelDRAW has no problem finding and applying the glyphs but CharMap doesn't show those "Private Use" characters.

Thanks kindly for the reference to the terrific article; although looking over the first few pages it looks like I've bit off more than I can chew.

CorelDRAW does not support all of the OpenType Features. You can find the supported features here:

OpenType features - CorelDRAW Help

I know that doesn't help with your question of font structure, but you will at least know what is supported. :-)
