It is always wise to be cautious when modifying the registry. In this case, I would say it is perfectly safe to make that change. But if that entry is wrong, there may be other errors too. For example, if you right click on a bitmap to edit it, is it opening in X6 or X7 photopaint?
The Shellnew entry actually controls what happens when you right click on the desktop and choose to create a new CDR file. It will probably offer to create a new "X6" CDR file. In practice, all it creates is a new shortcut with X6 in the title. It makes no difference to the version of CorelDraw that actually opens the file, nor does it actually affect thumbnails. But it is a quick indication that the registry is not completely correct for X7 as the main CorelDraw version.
If you have not already run the X7 repair installation (after you last did an install, uninstall or change with X6), I would do that and see if it changes that key. In principle, it should fix that and any other problems. But it is probably too soon after X7 launch to know for certain whether it does -- and if it does not, then the sooner we report it, the more likely it is to be fixed in the next update.
