When you are selecting objects on the screen by using the Pick tool, you draw a box around the objects you want to select. When you hold down the Alt key while drawing the box, anything the box touches will be selected, not just objects within the box.  Also, you can select shapes behind other shapes by holding down Alt and clicking the object you want. And here is another tip for selecting objects:  You can select an individual shape that is part of a group by holding down Ctrl and clicking the shape.  Likewise, in CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X6, you can select individual shapes within a PowerClip container by holding down Alt and clicking the shape you want.
