I am trying to use the fillet to close two lines that are not connected. Is this possible? I see how the fillet works with a closed object, but cannot figure out how to use it with two lines.
Let's focus on the Fillet/Scallop/Chamfer docker, since I assume that's what you are talking about.
To be able to affect a corner with the alternatives in the docker, we must first make sure we have a corner to work on.If the line and curve segments are not closed correctly, you can not use F/S/C.The lines may meet and look like a corner, but they are not connected because they are "end nodes" of a segment.
Attached is a simple file with a skewed rectangle converted to curve. The upper right corner is split and therefore there's no "true" corner.Select the object with the Pick tool, or select all or individual nodes with the Shape tool, and try to use F/S/C.You'll find that all except the upper right corner can be filleted. If you select the object with the Shape tool, you can also see that there are two arrows where the upper right node is supposed to be.These are showing the end nodes.Select both nodes and use "Extend curve to close" or "Close curve" (works also without selecting the nodes) and the corner is now closed and can be filleted.
