How do I make breaks in a vector line drawing?

For instance, if I have a circle and I want to make 1/16" breaks in the line in 3 or 4 places along the circle, how can I do this?  I have tried the eraser tool, but it closes the line up around where I erased.

    Now that you told us what you want to achieve; Yes, the Eraser tool can do exactly what you want:
    Just make sure you break one node apart first, to create an open curve instead of a closed object, then simply drag the Eraser across the outline where you want the breaks.
