Catalogue Creation

 Thank for the info. I will not need more than maybe 20 -25 pages depending on the size. I am not very good with Corel Draw. Would you be willing to share any examples that you have created? If you would it would help me greatly. My email address is matt.jones@callmp.net.

At 20 pages, CorelDRAW will probably be fine, but as you are working on
it, I think I'd create each page as a separate file until you get the
whole thing more or less done. Then you can copy and paste into one BIG
file at the end without the fear of losing your work in a crash. That
will also allow you to set up templates for several pages easily.

I wish I had some examples to send you. The closest thing I've got is
some catalog type flyers I made up for a gift basket company some years
ago, and they're only half page things. If you want to see one of those
for an idea of image layout, I'll be glad to send you one in PDF format.
You can open that in Draw with text as curves. Due to the nature of the
material, it's probably a lot more "frilly" than what you'd want unless
you've got really upscale plumbing parts and you're selling to consumers
rather than contractors.

I'd send the CDR file if I had it available, but it's on a old machine
that isn't currently running at the moment (and not likely to be for a
few weeks yet.) I don't even have the fonts available on this machine
yet. (Old machine died rather dramatically and haven't gotten the new
one completely set up yet.)

If you want that PDF to look at, I've got one that has two half pages
together to be printed front to back that's about 1.5 MB. (Includes high
res bitmap images for printing, I'm afraid.)It was a proof for the
customer. It might give you some ideas about placement on multiple pages
since the 'front' is different from the 'back'.

Most of the multi-page documents I create in CorelDRAW are not catalogs
but rather picture books or coloring books for preschoolers. The longest
one of those I have is 17 pages, bit it's pretty graphically intensive
including several almost full page bitmaps and at least one text box on
each page. That was done originally way back with CorelDRAW 3 and
updated over the years as the CorelDRAW technology improved. That, and
about 15 more like it, plus about 53 Word documents were all combined
into one Ventura document in the last year and a half. (It's a Sunday
School curriculum for two and three year olds.) From there I can print
PDFs of any 4 week "unit" or pieces thereof that I want as needed. I
hope before the end of the year to get the whole thing up on the web for
the church to be able to download. The whole thing is about 500 pages
worth. The summer stuff is up on the web now, if you really want to take
a look at it, but it's currently three very large PDF (4 - 10 MB) files.

and 3 for the other two files. Unit 3 is largest and is really made up
mostly of clipart that I need to redo soon to original art.

I know there are other folks on this forum who have created catalogs,
but if you don't get any response, try the Corel.com newsgroup. I know
they've discussed catalogs at length on that list.

Thank you for the info. Your sunday scool lesson looks really great! If you could send me that flyer you mentioned I think it would help me alot. It's nice to be able to ask people like you about this stuff. It would take me alot of time to learn the things you've already learned.

Thanks for the kind words. Email is on the way, Matt. Let me know if it
doesn't arrive for some reason. Computer is acting kind of funny this
morning. I think the AntiVirus program is acting up.

While it does take a while to learn everything that CorelDRAW can do, it
doesn't take much time to learn enough to accomplish some really great
stuff on it. Most folks don't tap into but about a quarter of its
capability or less.

Hi Mat,

 I create multi page catalogues all the time. Should you need any advice, please feel free to contact me. Corel Draw is easy to use and there are some simple things that you can do to ensure a good result. The beauty of X3 is that not only can you create a catalogue for print, but you can also publish that catalogue to PDF format. Making it good to email.

I am just getting into catalog and web site design and am very interested in any tips you are will to share.  So far I have used CoreDRAW mainly for engraving designs.  The little bit of "print" work I've done is mostly to copy design for customer approval.  So far all my brochure and advertising work has been done in Microsoft Word.  I never thought of CorelDRAW for this kind of work but can see where it should be a good fit.

 Anyway, if you have any tutorial sites that you can direct us to or any tips to share we'd be very appreciative.  I need to expand and a real catalog that can then be adapted to some of our web page needs would be awesome!
