I have created a series of geographical contour maps using Coreldraw, I would now like to turn these into 3d animations, can anyone recommend the right software? More generally, I am planning a complex 3d animation project which will all be new territory for me. I imagine the process will start with the production of detailed 2d vector drawings which can be rendered into 3d models? Can coreldraw (software I am very familiar with) play a part or must I rely solely on the 3d graphics software I ultimately end up using? Many thanks.

HI.
I think Draw is great for the illustration part, ie creating the images to be used.
If you will be doing a lot of batch exporting you might be able to write a macro that can batch export the graphics for you.
The Boxed version of CorelDraw Graphics Suite also contains a movie making software call Swish MiniMax 2 which is similar to Flash.

Hey,
Check Blender 3D, It's amazing, free(GNU General Public License) software.you can download at http://www.blender.org/
Thanks
Thank you for that. I have had a preliminary look at Blender 3D and it looks great.
I had been led to believe I needed something from the Autodesk stable like Mayer or 3Ds Max and had been trying to justify the enormous financial outlay involved.
On the face of it Blender seems to be offering similar capability, there must be some catch?
My problem is that I am torn between two hardware systems and am not sure which direction to go in.
As a long time user of Coreldraw/Paint, I am very comfortable and competent with the software and use it exclusively to create all my graphics.
However, when I got into video production, I used Apples ‘Final Cut Pro’ on a Mac and simply continued to use Corel graphic work from my PC, importing it into Final Cut Pro as and when I needed.
Ideally, I should ditch the PC and concentrate on my Mac but this would mean ditching Coreldraw and moving to Adobe Illustrator, a programme I am not familiar with.
I don’t really want to install windows on my Mac just so that I can use CorelDraw.
The project I am planning will involve live video footage, lots of graphics and 3D animations and I really need the various software to work seamlessly together. A vector illustrator for the basic modelling, a 3D animator to turn the models into animations and Final Cut Pro to bring everything together.
I need some basic advice to focus my direction.
Cheers,
