I have a bitmap image that is in black and white. I would like to make the white areas black and the black areas white. Is there a way to do this?

Select your bitmap image, goto Effects -> Transform -> Invert...

If the bitmap is "black and white" (not grayscale) you can change colors as any vector, with right mouse button on the color palette and the left mouse button for background.
