Help! How can I change the color of one special character...

I have a special character in the file below, that I can't change the Color. I can change the size.
If I try to convert to Curves this character disappear. 

Any type of help into identifying the problem and how can I solve it, would be awesome.

    A couple things. One, if I export that file to an AI file, that character (for lack of a better term) is a curve. Two, it acts like it is an inline rectangle that was pasted into the paragraph text box. But it isn't. And it certainly isn't Times New Roman.

    Select the paragraph text frame. Press ctrl+shift+t and edit the text. Once you do, the blue color is the character color and it can then be further edited on the page (versus the previous Edit Text function).
