I have just had to do a complete re-install of my CorelSuite X4 following the addition of a new hard-drive.
I now have the situation in Corel Photo-paint where -
1 I open a grey-scale image (.jpg).
2 I paste (as a new object) an RGB colour item (a previously created .cpt file) onto the grey-scale image.
3 I then "Convert to 16Bit grey-scale" in order to change the whole new image to grey-scale, but the pasted object is being automatically flattened into the image and I can no longer work on that object independently.
I never had this before, as I was always able to convert to grey-scale and the "pasted object" would remain with the mask outlined and still allow me to work on it.
Could anyone please tell me how to achieve this again please?

Are you sure that the original image you opened was a greyscale image?
When I try this, because the original image I opened was greyscale, the rgb image I paste as the new object immediately becomes greyscale without any need to convert it afterwards. I'm not sure whether it should, but it seems fairly logical, considering that it's being pasted into a greyscale image.

Ah, I can reproduce the problem, but only if I convert the greyscale image back to rgb before opening it. Then, I can paste RGB as a separate object and it remains RGB.
If I try to convert the pasted image I then get the message:
If I answer No then the converted image remains as a separate object, which is how you wanted it.
But if you have at some time ticked the "don't show warning" option, or if the settings have become corrupted, that screen will be skipped altogether and I guess is why the objects are being merged.
It looks like you can turn it on again (and hence get the option to choose no again) with tools > options > warnings > flatten image

Please accept my apologies ---- you are absolutely correct. The original .jpg, although appearing as greyscale, is in fact 24bit RGB, and therefore allows a "colour" object to be pasted onto it, with the convert to greyscale then taking place.
