Is there an easy way to make a simple, straight, vertical dashed line?

Yes, start with a solid vertical line (holding the control key will help you keep it vertical as you draw it).
Then go to the outline pen tool (F12), choose your pen width and select a dash pattern in the dropdown.
The dash generator is slightly crude and you will find that one end of the line either has a partial dash or the line ends during a gap and therefore appears to be slightly short of your original line. If that's a problem you will need to do object > convert outline to object and you can then stretch the result to the correct length.
