What's a "rich" black

Hi Everybody,
What's a "rich" black.
My photos are posted on the web. They are also printed at COSTCO in various sizes from 4" x 6" to poster sizes. COSTCO uses a photographic printer for the smaller sizes and an ink jet printer for poster size prints.
My final files are made in PhotoPaint and flattened in a TIF or JPEG format.

Black at 100%K tends to be on the gray side as it's just one color. Rich black uses CMYK to create a darker black. A rich black. ie 100%K 100% CMY

I'm not sure exactly where you are going with the question. What are you trying to accomplish?

Thanks for the reply.
1. Doesn't this run the risk of getting a black in a shade of some color if 100% CMY is not perfectly black.
2. Am I correct in assuming that I need not worry about it with files in sRGB format.

1. Only if the registration is off they are over top of each other. And just so I hope I made sense, I meant 100% coverage of all four colors.

The question only applies to CMYK work.

Costco I imagine is expecting RGB images, at least for the photo sizes, because the average photographer might not even know what CMYK is, and would certainly not know how to create it. Of course, the photo printer must convert rgb to cmyk internally but that's not something you have control over -- but if you did send them a CMYK file, chances are they would convert it back to RGB to be compatible with the photo printer, like most non-postscript desktop printers do.

For the web, you definitely need RGB because that's what the end user will see on the screen. I suspect that many browsers would render CMYK images badly if at all.

Well, technically you can print CMYK to a PCL print driver (not that it would give intended results), then in turn the print driver processes it as RGB then printers own internal print conversion.

But yeah, photos always best to leave RGB and let them handle it all.

I have to admit I'm a little curious what brought the question up? :)
