How in the world does one change the margins within the text frame box? I see indents under paragraph, but I'd like to be able to control each side relative to the outside text box, not relative to the paragraph, if that makes sense...almost like the padding in CSS. Is this possible?

Indents are how you control the text from the edge of the text box.
If this is not what you need can you post an image of what you mean?
That's what I was afraid of and that's how I was doing it. Can that be set globally as a default?
Yes you can!
(1) Open the Object Style Docker go to Paragraph Text set your defaults.
(2) Click button to Set New Document Default.
