Another way – you can make this using plug-ins like ShapeShifter from Kai’s Power Tools (KPT) collection. For this kind of job I use ShapeShifter plug-in from KPT 5. (Don’t know is it available now to purchasing). It works with Adobe Photoshop and Corel Photo-Paint and allows you to create many amazing effects like that:
In this example the bird’s shapes was improved with this plug-in.
Of course, you can get something like this using only built-in software functions (like Layer Styles in Photoshop) but it can take more time to get desired results. You can find very much lessons about using Photoshop effects on the Web.
Also it’s not a problem for professional artists to make this as vector drawing. But you cannot get a perfect result if you have never worked with Blend or Mesh Fill tools.

Anthonie - could you be more clear on the steps you used. I am not sure how you used the intersection of the rings, to distort the linear fills. Thanks! Or what did you do to distort the linear gradient fill?
