I see two icons (essentially a dot and a rectangle) inside my color fill indicator at the bottom of my screen. I can get the dot to appear in objects I create by "combining" but cannot get the rectangle to replicate in any created object. These are in an imported file. What do they mean? (See below example.)

It means the fill is overprinted :) (Edit->Overprint fill)
The small dot rectangle is for Overprint, like Hendrik said.The small dot rectangle indicates it is a spot color.
vice versa: rectangle — overprint, dot — spot color

I spent a rather large amount of time this afternoon looking for this answer. I had a document where some of my text would have one of,but not all of these. I searched "Fill Color Box" and nothing came up...hopefully now it will.
