Recently had problematic re-install of both X3 and X5. Finally succeeded in sequential numeric order (i.e. first X3 and then X5). However now, CONNECT X5 no longer displays CDR vector file thumbnails. Currently CDRs are associated with X3. Is that the possible cause? What else might be contributing to this problem?
Thanks for any and all ideas!
Happy New Year!
Put the X5 DVD in the drive and when the install menu appears, choose Repair. This will fix your file associations and perhaps even restore the thumbnail preview (that may be casued by the Corel Windows Shell extension.)
Hi Hugh!
V-wha-lah! Say Magnifiqué!!! THANK YOU! You make it look easy, Sir! Thumbnails are restored!
Have a great 2011!
In my previous post, I said that, "all's well that ends well". Well, I hesitate to say it, but I'm not sure it has ended yet.
Although Connect is now displaying CDR and CPT files properly (great!) it isn't displaying Thumbnails for WMF files - is it supposed to? All I'm getting it the generic icon.
Tnanks.

The shell extension is just that, an extension to the Windows Shell file handling. The Corel Shell Extension only adds the CDR and CPT to the thumbnail image handling of Windows.
Using Windows own Explorer, and setting the view to Medium Icons or better, then you can see the Windows Metafile Format images....(It is a Windows "thing".)

OK, I have a solution of sorts…First I have to give “a poke in the eye” to Corel Tech Service yuck yuck yuck, as they do not have a clue as to this Corel Connect icon issue…Now they can investigate and figure it out….OK the solution (which I pieced together from the above posts)…..I believe the fault (at least in my case) was a corrupted “Corel Graphics - Windows Shell Extension” file. I say this due to the fact that even after a full uninstall (including a check in the remove user info box) / reinstall. I did not see the icons until I removed the “Corel Graphics - Windows Shell Extension” via the Windows Control Panel “Programs and Features”; then reinstalled via Corel Setup – “Repair” installation….(verifying the install Corel Graphics - Windows Shell Extension in one of the 4 install process tabs was checked)I was advise by Corel TS to remove a Windows security up date (from August 2012) which is mentioned in a above post…(It appears they (Microsoft) removed support for security reasons…seehttp://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/wmf-in-windows-explorer-not-shown-as-thumbnails/3f2beb84-54a2-4aa8-9689-b5addb3af237)... For reference.….Do not do this, Windows security updates are provided for a reason….The issue is (as stated in above postings) the “Corel Graphics - Windows Shell Extension” file gets corrupted ( because of the Security Update?) … and does not get deleted with a standard uninstall of the CD Graphics Suite (both X5 & X6). (At this point it is just a matter of Corel Corp…building and posting a patch which completely deletes, then re-installs, the “Corel Graphics - Windows Shell Extension”)….It should be also noted that “post MS security update” new (original) installations of CDGS will not experience the problem. In summary-….I should note that I have a Windows 7 64 Bit OS, and this issue may be limited to 64 bit OS installs…..if you are experiencing thumbnails instead of actual icons in Corel Connect here are the steps- - Perform a complete uninstall of CDGS- - Go to the Windows Control Panel “Programs and Features” window and uninstall the Corel Graphics - Windows Shell Extension.- - Clean the Windows System registry using Norton Utilities or CCleaner or any registry utility program.- - Reinstall CDGS via Standard install option.- - Verify the Corel Graphics - Windows Shell Extension is present via a peek at the Control Panel “Programs and Features”.

If I've read one post about this issue, I've read 50. This was the most intelligent answer I read. I followed it to the letter.
The result? Now instead of Corel icons in my thumbnail view, I have little white dogeared sheets of paper, both in Windows Explorer and in Adobe Bridge. Interestingly, Corel Connect now displays CPT and CDR thumbnails. Swell.
FWIW, I did notice that the Windows Shell Extension went from v.16 to v.15. How is this possible? Got me.
Well, I fixed it in X5. Here's how.
First I followed Davo's advice. The results of that were as I wrote above - some change but no win.
Then I downloaded and installed X6 eval. This installed the v.16 Shell Extension. Voila! Thar be thumbnails! Then I uninstalled X6 eval. The v.16 Shell Extension was left in place.
So, to fix X5 - uninstall/reinstall to clean any corrupted files, then get the v.16 Shell Extension put in place, and you're in.
Thanks Davo!
