I have Corel PhotoPaint X5 running on Windows 7 x64. Every time I save a jpg or jpeg file, the file cannot be shared and appears with a padlock on the bottom left hand corner. To be able to share it, I have to go to the properties of every individual photo and add "Everyone" to the permissions in the Security Tab. Other files save OK. Its only jpg/jpeg files that get locked. Anyone have any ideas how to solve this annoying problem?
I am also having the same problem. Running Corel PhotoPaint X5 (Version 15.2.0.686) on Windows 7 Pro x64. When exporting files, certain file types do not retain the proper sharing permssions. File types such as JPG,PNG,GIF lose the permissions, however file types such as TIFF, CPT, PDF retain the permissions. This would seem to be a problem with the application since only certain file types are affected. If you have solved the problem, or anyone can offer any solutions other than manually changing the permissions, I would appreciate it.

In Windows 7, Microsoft altered the network sharing settings and a bunch of internals. One main thing that MS eliminated was the global 'Everyone' permissions. It is still there, but has to be manually added on many files/directories. Even on a directory that has 'Everyone' added, writing a new file into that directory, Windows does not add the 'Everyone' attribute to the sharing of that file. The 'Everyone' tag, (the lack of the lock on the lower left corner) of a file, may depend upon the file extension, also. I found that jpg files are always locked until one of two actions that I take. Either I manually share them with 'Everyone' or I do a total reboot. In the past, I added an 'Everyone' group to the groups that I share, in the network sharing options. (And sometimes, the reboot option does not work.)
The implementation of the 'Everyone' sharing was not too clean, in my opinion, as some file types get the tag and others do not, as they are written to the disk. I do not know where MS' head is when they decided to 'tighten security and file sharing across networks' It seems that there was a half of a job, done in this aspect.....(Too many developers that do not have a decent means of communication, in place, is my best guess.)
Thanks for the post Hugh. It sounds as though you are pointing the finger at Windows 7, but I find it strange that some file types work, and others don't. Furthermore, saving a JPG using MS Paint works fine. And, as you can see from the post before yours, previous versions of Corel appear to work with Windows 7. This would lead me to believe the problem is with Corel X5, not Windows 7. Thoughts?
Please do not forget that MS Paint is made by Microsoft, and is part of the Windows O/S installation. You can be sure that MS makes sure their stuff operates the way they want.
And, yes, I am pointing the finger at Windows 7. And yes, some file types do not end up locked, and yes, some file types do, especially those that MS deemed to be able to carry harmful data. (I am speaking stenography, in the case of jpegs.....) MS supposedly, does not allow stenography to be written to their jpeg files via MS Paint. (i.e.: MS Paint will not include stenography when writing a jpeg file. Unless Paint has been tampered with.)
More, my WinXP Pro does not place a lock on jpeg files, even files generated by (X5) PhotoPaint, running on the XP machine....so guess where that leaves us....
I am having issues saving a jpg file after I edit it. None of the changes are saved. The only way to get around this is to "save as" and give file another name. I am also runnung Win7 64bit and Corelx5. I'll keep using this solution untill MS o Corel come up with a fix.
Between the random crashes prior to SP3 and now the weird file locking and not saving file changes, I've had it.
I resisted switching to other graphics apps for over a decade, especially since I have old .cpt files that basically lock me into staying with PhotoPaint, but X5 has been nightmarish. I can see now I need to learn how to work in other graphics tools ASAP and convert my old .cpt files to others while my X5 is still somewhat functional.
